What is Naga Threads?
We are a small business started as a way to show off the amazing traditional patterns and designs found in Myanmar and to help raise awareness of what is happening in Myanmar right now. We are heartbroken by the suffering and cruelty currently being felt by the people there and we want to make a difference.
What does Naga mean?
Naga is a Burmese word that means dragon or legendary serpent. When looking for a name for our venture, we wanted a name that would be easy for an American audience to quickly read while also representing the Myanmar people. The dragons of Myanmar legends are fearsome and resilient.
Why Myanmar?
When living in Thailand and working closely with many people from Myanmar, I saw just how much they were suffering and was heartbroken to see that this tragedy has been completely overlooked by the general public and media. I wanted to make the situation there as well known as the suffering in places like Ukraine.
Who's behind Naga Threads?
For now, it is just me. My name is Jared Johnson and I am 23 years old. I've been studying the Burmese language for two and a half years, and spent a year and a half of that time living in Thailand among refugees from Myanmar teaching English, serving those in need, among other activities as a missionary. I realized that I wanted to do more for the people inside and outside of Myanmar so the plan for Naga Threads neckties began to form. Now, I am going to continue working to grow this business to expand the reach and help more people in need while bringing the issues of what is happening in Myanmar to the public awareness.
